Although it is globally estimated that over half of the population is under the age of 30, young people appear to be underrepresented in many spheres of civil society. Within decision-making processes, youth are largely excluded due to a combination of components related to age-based assumptions, a lack of access to platforms for participation, and scarce opportunities for meaningful engagement. The consequences of overlooking young people’s perspectives can translate into weaker social engagement, poorer areas for innovation, and a wide-ranging opportunity cost. In the Sport for All Movement, this alarming lack of youth representation and participation has also been documented in recent reports that highlight the indispensable opportunity for organizations to reshape the landscape of youth engagement in volunteer, leadership, and decision-making positions in sport.
In this webinar, we will explore strategies that sport organizations can adopt to create opportunities for youth to take on leadership roles and be included in decision-making procedures. The session will have a focus on attracting more youth to sport, fostering a more supportive, conducive, and inclusive environment where young people from diverse backgrounds feel empowered to contribute their ideas, perspectives, and talents to the Sport for All Movement.
